Hannah K Johnson

Hannah K Johnson is a ceramicist based in Pasadena, California. Having graduated from Bard College with a focus in photography, Johnson eventually found her way to ceramics, beginning with classes at Xiem Clay Center and Glendale Community College. She went on to practice independently, honing her craft under her eponymous label, HKJ.

Johnson is most interested in the objects that serve us in everyday life and finds herself drawn to those things we interact with frequently but rarely reward with adequate attention to design. Working mainly with Californian clay bodies, she uses a combination of hand-throwing, cutting and hand-glazing to create functional pieces that are unique and expressive of the tension between formal elegance and material strength.
