An elegant oval platter hand-built from a slab and glazed in a lustrous, glossy white glaze reminiscent of a meringue frosting. A bas-relief scalloped detail ornaments the edge, meticulously hand-carved and sculpted to add tactility and pattern. Both in form and finish, Dering’s platter recalls early 20th-century white stoneware fish platters from France: exaggerated ovals intended for the dimensions of a whole fish to be served at the table. Known for heavily-textured carved lines, Dering sought to employ a new method for this platter: relief carving. Each platter is sketched, carved and finished by hand, ensuring each piece is completely unique while staying in conversation with the larger body of work in which linear carving is a key technical component.

One platter, signed edition of 20.

Zoe Dering

Zoe Dering

Zoe Dering is a potter based in the Bay Area, CA. Born in Glen Ellen, she was introduced to pottery at a young age but only pursued it as a hobby in her mid-twenties when she was working as a pastry chef in San Francisco. Pottery quickly became a passion and, in 2013, after a handful of years as a hobbyist, she left her 10-year baking career with the intention of making ceramics her full-time work. Though Dering is largely self-taught, she has taken several classes at Bay Area studios and worked under local potters for many years. By 2016-17 she was able to launch her practice full-time. Dering creates technically masterful heirloom pieces intended for daily use and communal celebration. Her work draws inspiration from architecture, nature and the ancient world—Dering is fascinated by primitive crafts and how they continue to be represented and transformed in our modern lives without losing connection to their original raisons-d’être, everyday objects that convey the symbiosis of form and function. Dering's body of work involves integrating rhythmical sculptural elements into warm, earthy objects. She considers her practice to be a meditation in the movement of the hands, the quieting of the mind and the observation of the patterns that appear while the mind and body work in harmony. Each piece is unique, a reflection of an ephemeral moment.
