A wide, round hand-built marbled platter made of two different clays whose natural color values work in striking visual opposition. Inspired by the Japanese Nerikomi technique of stacking and cutting different colors of clay to create patterns, Nawabi’s platter combines both a creamy, porcelain-textured B-Mix and Mission Red Stoneware, a grittier clay that fires to an earthy dark hue in reduction. Unpredictable, geologic designs emerge from the layered and rolled clay, where Nawabi’s hand-carving, much like peeling skin from a fruit, unveils variations buried within each piece. Nawabi believes this stage of her process to be a form of reductive drawing: etching until the platter’s composition resolves, its patterns reaching a place of balance and poetry. Beneath the surface, an infinitude of arrangements lie unseen, like the layers of sediment that form the earth’s crust. Each platter is utterly unique. Nawabi’s technique dictates the inherent aesthetic variation: the pattern is in the process.

One platter, signed edition of 16.
