A round mid-sized stoneware platter thrown on the wheel in an iron-rich blend of clays with a soft semi-transparent eggshell texture that allows the native qualities and textures of the clay to ghost through. Davies’s platter is painted freehand with a quilt-like pattern of iron and cobalt oxide, an inky hue that alludes to Japanese sumi ink calligraphy. Informed by his study of architecture, Davies applies rigorous attention to structure, ergonomics and elegance in his focus on objects intended for everyday use. His work incorporates a variety of British clay bodies, sourced primarily from Staffordshire and Cornwall, often blending them to make specific colors and textures, while taking a minimal, restrained approach to glazing and palette. Each of Davies’s platters is unique.

One platter, signed edition of 15.

Edmund Davies

Edmund Davies is a studio potter based in Norfolk, UK whose practice revolves around the production of functional wheel-thrown pieces. After training in architecture, Davies began working in clay through a membership at Turning Earth, an open-access ceramics studio in Hoxton, London. He moved on to establish his own ceramics studio, shared with potters Andrea Roman and Skye Corewijn, in East London, where he worked for three years and established the retail collective, ceramics274. Davies went on to run Hoxton Gardenware, Hoxton Gardenware, a nonprofit that empowers and employs local youth in the production of small-batch terracotta planter pots. In 2022, he founded Helgate, a pottery studio based in the heart of Norwich that provides classes for all levels, apprenticeships, and studios for local potters.
