'Alice's Kitchen Basket' is a woven rush bowl designed with chef Alice Waters as part of her ongoing collaboration with Permanent Collection. This wide, shallow basket is handmade by Clair Murphy in Wales, using rush harvested from along the River Isle in Somerset, England. Murphy gathers the rush herself, wading into the water, and partially dries the stalks in the sun before weaving them into baskets.

This generously-sized, lightweight basket is modeled after a favorite woven basket that sits at the end of Alice's butcher block where it is used to keep onions, shallots, and garlic. It makes an equally functional harvest basket for gathering herbs and lettuce from the garden. Rush is exceptionally adaptable and strong, and can be plaited, woven into cord, become a dense fabric, or an airy construction. A bright green when newly-harvested, it will burnish over time, turning a lovely caramel color.

As with all of the pieces in Alice’s Kitchen Collection, 5% of proceeds go toward supporting her foundation, The Edible Schoolyard Project, whose mission is to build and share a national edible education curriculum for pre-kindergarten through high school.

Clair Murphy

Clair Murphy

Clair Murphy is a weaver and teacher based in Wales who has had nearly twenty years of experience crafting handmade baskets. Having developed an interest in basketmaking in 2004, she took courses at City Lit College in London between 2007 and 2011 where she earned an advanced diploma in Creative Basketmaking. Murphy uses English Rush, (Scheonoplectus Lacustris), also known as Club or Coopers’ Rush, for her weaving, which she typically harvests in Somerset over the summer, wading into the water in a wetsuit to do so. The cyclical nature of harvesting, drying, and weaving—a process unique to the natural materials she uses—is a source of inspiration. Nothing can be hurried. While Murphy allows herself to be led by the material, she is fascinated by structure, which is why the majority of her baskets are intended for use—a constant interplay between beauty and function.
