Alice's Amphora is a large statement vase designed to hold seasonal arrangements such as spring branches or evergreen boughs. Named for Alice Waters, the amphora is inspired by the large antique urn that lives permanently in the corner of her kitchen, amid stacks of bowls, candlesticks and baskets from a lifetime of collecting vintage pieces on her travels. Its rich green glaze is likewise a nod to the green pottery of Provence and North Africa, two places that have exerted a huge influence on Alice's cuisine. This vase is destined to become a permanent fixture, whether placed on the floor in the corner of the living room, or on a counter in the kitchen. Either way, it is, above all, intended to be used—its size, shape and capacity were carefully considered to ensure that arranging in it would be a pleasure, a ritual to be repeated with the changing seasons.

We worked closely with Niki Shelley of MANU Ceramics, a Berkeley-based ceramicist, to create this vessel to Alice's specifications while allowing Shelley to express her artistic interpretation of the form. Loosely inspired by the ancient Etruscan amphorae at the National Etruscan Museum in Chiusi, Italy, Shelley’s intention was to create a reserved, modern interpretation that would lend itself to dramatic, abundant displays.

Note: As these pieces are constructed by hand and subject to an atmospheric firing process, unique results should be expected. Each piece will vary slightly in color depending on its location in the kiln. The vase, when full, can be quite heavy—we recommend carrying it by the base rather than by the handles. Wash gently by hand.

Niki Shelley

Niki Shelley

Niki Shelley is a Berkeley-based artist and ceramicist whose practice hinges on making forms intended to reflect a sense of radical hospitality. Having graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking from the California College of Arts & Crafts, Shelley spent several years in New York City before returning to the world of craft—she has been working as a full-time ceramicist for the last seven years. Though she is mostly self-taught, her style is informed by the formal aesthetic principles she studied in art school. She draws inspiration from folk art traditions and a myriad of theoretical sources—ranging from Gaston Bachelard, to Jacques Derrida, Yanagi Sōetsu and Raoul Vaneigem—whose writings on beauty, the life of objects, hospitality, everyday life, and our relationship to the built environment have profoundly shaped her creative process. She primarily works with clay sourced from Southern California and strives to recycle all her clay trimmings and scraps, making all of her own glazes in-house using raw materials. The Amphora for Alice’s Collection is loosely inspired by the ancient Etruscan amphorae at the National Etruscan Museum in Chius, Italy. Shelley’s intention was to create a reserved, modern interpretation that would lend itself to dramatic, abundant displays.
