Bread Cloche

Rooted in historical bread-baking and ceramic practices, this clay bread cloche is a traditional kitchen tool designed to bake delicious, professional quality bread at home. The cloche creates a steamed atmosphere for the dough—similar to a steam-injected oven used in industrial baking—allowing moisture to escape and open the crust at an even pace. The result is perfectly baked bread, finished with a gorgeous, well-developed crust and ideal rise. A sculptural statement piece, the cloche is also handy for storing previously made or purchased bread on your countertop.

Wheel-spun by Isatu Hyde in Shropshire, UK, the piece’s clay body contains a high mica content, making it thermally resistant and suitable for stovetop and oven cooking. Working from a stone outbuilding on a 13th-century farm, Isatu’s practice draws influence from the shapes and forms of West African potters, a tie to her ancestry; as well as Pre-Industrial, European Country, and Medieval pottery. The body of each cloche is made on the wheel with pulled and attached handles. After it's formed, the piece is dried thoroughly and sanded by hand, and finished in a slip made from the same clay.

Made exclusively for Permanent Collection by Isatu Hyde in Shropshire, UK.

Isatu Hyde

Isatu Hyde

Isatu Hyde is a potter and designer specializing in restrained and technically masterful wheel-thrown ceramics. Having graduated from Falmouth University in Sustainable Product Design, she went on to apprentice with master potter Andrew Crouch in her hometown of Ludlow, UK. Hyde recently set up a workshop in Shropshire, near the border of Wales, where she works with both Cornish stoneware clay and a low firing earthenware body whose high mica content renders it usable for stovetop and oven cooking. She prefers not to glaze her cookware, instead sanding and buffing it to allow the mica to shimmer through.

Based in the countryside, she finds herself constantly noticing natural forms, colors, and textures, and often begins designing by making simple pencil drawings in a continuous line. As a new mother, the home, table, body, and nourishment are more present than ever in her work. Other influences range from pre-industrial ceramics from female traditions, to Minoan, Mexican, and European Country pottery, and sculpture from 13th-century Ifè (in present-day Nigeria).
