Silver / Gold

The stunning Blunk Bangle features a cylindrical solid sterling silver band fitted with a sliding charm. Crafted by hand, this bracelet is cast from a unique piece of jewelry made in 1965 by the legendary Northern Californian artist JB Blunk (1926–2002). The original, composed of 18k gold, was a gift for Jacqueline Johnson, a writer and poet, and the wife of the British-born Surrealist painter Gordon Onslow Ford. As much a piece of wearable kinetic sculpture as it is an example of fine jewelry-making, the Blunk Bangle feels at once ancient and totally contemporary – there’s no other bracelet quite like it. Blunk began making jewelry in 1954 at Palos Verdes College in Los Angeles where he taught ceramics – he continued to make one-off pieces throughout his life from his studio in Inverness, California.

Permanent Collection selected this bracelet, as well as the Blunk Double Hoop Earrings, to be faithfully reproduced in exceptionally limited quantities so that Blunk’s rare designs could become part of the collections of a new generation of women. Learn more about JB Blunk Estate.

The jewelry produced by Permanent Collection in collaboration with the JB Blunk Estate is intended to celebrate a lesser-known facet of Blunk’s artistic practice: that of fine jeweler and goldsmith. The legendary Northern Californian artist JB Blunk (1926–2002) never made his jewelry commercially; rather, he crafted unique pieces in his Inverness studio for those women closest to him: his wife, daughter and dear friends. Blunk’s art practice began in 1950 in Japan where he apprenticed with Japanese National Treasures Kitaoji Rosanjin and Kaneshige Toyo. When Blunk returned to California in 1954, he began designing and fabricating jewelry at Palos Verdes College in Los Angeles where he also taught ceramics.

Permanent Collection selects these stunning, historical pieces—designed between 1955 and 1980—to be faithfully reproduced by Bay Area jewelry designer Tess Young. Young was chosen by Permanent Collection for the fineness of her work and for an organic approach to metals and ores that chimes with Blunk’s own wabi-sabi philosophy. Young studied silversmithing in Chicago and has been designing jewelry since 2009.
