This oversized, unlined, heavy linen jacket with large pockets and a shawl collar is the collection’s chameleon. Sturtevant is the jacket you grab as you’re running out of the door to throw on over a sweater, but likewise makes a bold, chic statement with its architectural three-quarter sleeve and Japanese-inspired silhouette.
The Sturtevant jacket is named for the American artist Elaine Sturtevant, known simply as “Sturtevant” (1924–2014), who achieved notoriety for her careful, but intentionally inexact, replicas of works by other artists. The curator of her 2014 MoMA exhibition, Peter Eleey, suggested that: “In some ways, style is her medium. She was the first postmodern artist — before the fact — and also the last.”
