This pair of earrings is the second in an ongoing series of releases that celebrate a lesser-known facet of J.B. Blunk’s artistic practice: that of fine jeweler and goldsmith. Northern Californian artist J.B. Blunk (1926–2002) never made his jewelry commercially; rather, he crafted unique pieces in his Inverness studio for those women closest to him: his wife, daughter and dear friends. Blunk’s art practice began in 1950 in Japan where he apprenticed with Japanese National Treasures Kitaoji Rosanjin and Kaneshige Toyo. When Blunk returned to California in 1954, he began designing and fabricating jewelry at Palos Verdes College in Los Angeles where he also taught ceramics.

Permanent Collection selected these special earrings, made in 1980, to be faithfully reproduced by Bay Area jewelry designer Tess Young. Young was chosen by Permanent Collection for the fineness of her work and for an organic approach to metals and ores that chimes with Blunk’s own wabi-sabi philosophy. Young studied silversmithing in Chicago and has been designing jewelry since 2009.

True to the original, this pair is beautifully and intentionally mismatched. Please consult the dimensions note below for differences in measurements.

The longer style is approximately 1.75–1.87 inches long and .63–.75 inches wide. The earhook is approximately .5 x .5 inches. The stone is approximately 16–18mm diameter. The average weight is 3.1 grams inclusive of exactly 1.25 grams’ worth of 14k recycled gold per earring.

The shorter style is approximately 1.25–1.38 inches long and .5–.63 inches wide. The earhook is approximately 1.13 x .63 inches. The stone is approximately 14–16mm diameter. The average weight is 2.88 grams inclusive of 1.2 grams’ worth of 14k recycled gold.

The total average weight of a mismatched pair is 5.98 grams inclusive of exactly 2.45 grams’ worth of 14k recycled gold.

Permanent Collections offers free shipping and returns on U.S. domestic orders. We also offer UPS 2-day Air for $20 and UPS Next Day Air for $50, for U.S. domestic orders. International shipping to Canada and Europe is a flat rate of $50. Shipping to all other international locations is a flat rate of $75.

Orders are processed the following business day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Orders received on weekends and holidays will be processed the next business day. Availability of products is not guaranteed. If you have ordered an item that is not available or that is delayed, we will notify you via email or telephone. When your order is processed, you will receive a shipment confirmation email with the shipping tracking number. Residents of California will pay state tax on their purchase (8.75%). Orders will be shipped via UPS.

Expected arrival date for international orders is approximately 10-14 days from the order date. For international orders, a customs duty will be charged to you depending upon the country in which you reside and the cost of the product you have ordered. Permanent Collection is NOT responsible for payment of this duty. Please consult an online duties calculator before placing your order, as this charge could amount to a few hundred additional dollars for which you will be liable. Orders will be shipped via UPS.

Should you wish to return an item, it must be in unused, unworn, unwashed, unaltered, and in undamaged condition and returned within 14 days of purchase. All returns must include original packaging: any boxes, hangers, garment bags, and other packaging materials.

We will then email you a return UPS shipping label and a return packing slip for you to mark with the reason(s) for your return. Repackage the item(s) you would like to return and place the prepaid UPS return label on the outside of the box you’ll ship back to us at:
