The Asawa scarf is named for the artist Ruth Asawa (1926-2013), a Japanese-American sculptor best known for her vast body of hanging woven wire sculptures. She began making her intricate, lissome pieces in the late 1940s, after studying at the renowned Black Mountain College in North Carolina. She continued making her iconic works over the course of a remarkable career spanning seven decades.
