Sun Moon Bracelet

Sun Moon Bracelet

Made in the early 1970s, the original 'Sun Moon Bracelet' was––like so many of the unique pieces designed by artist JB Blunk––a present for his wife, Christine Nielson, who has worn it nearly every day for the last 40 years. Blunk's bracelet was made of brass fitted with two beads: one carved from a deer antler, the other from ivory. Our reproduction is also fashioned of solid brass, but we’ve sourced sustainable American buffalo horn and cow bone for our beads. We’ve named this style the 'Sun Moon Bracelet' for its planetary feel. Blunk made work that often responded to nature and its organic forms––this bracelet brings a bit of the solar system to your wrist. As with all of our Blunk Estate collaborations, this piece is fabricated in California by jeweler Tess Young to faithfully reproduce a historical design from the JB Blunk archive. The jewelry produced by Permanent Collection in collaboration with the JB Blunk Estate is intended to celebrate a lesser-known facet of Blunk’s artistic practice: that of fine jeweler and goldsmith. The legendary Northern Californian artist JB Blunk (1926–2002) never made his jewelry commercially; rather, he crafted unique pieces in his Inverness studio for those women closest to him: his wife, daughter and dear friends. Blunk’s art practice began in 1950 in Japan where he apprenticed with Japanese National Treasures Kitaoji Rosanjin and Kaneshige Toyo. When Blunk returned to California in 1954, he began designing and fabricating jewelry at Palos Verdes College in Los Angeles where he also taught ceramics.

Permanent Collection selects these stunning, historical pieces—designed between 1955 and 1980—to be faithfully reproduced by Bay Area jewelry designer Tess Young. Young was chosen by Permanent Collection for the fineness of her work and for an organic approach to metals and ores that chimes with Blunk’s own wabi-sabi philosophy. Young studied silversmithing in Chicago and has been designing jewelry since 2009.
