This sculptural, functional pepper mill was conceived by Italian artist and designer, Martino Gamper, and crafted in Norfolk, UK from solid walnut wood fitted with a rust-resistant ceramic grinder that can be adjusted for other spices. Martino—who is part of our 'design family' (he created our Acqua e Vino glassware set)—was inspired by the mountainous landscape of his home region in the north of Italy. Though the word 'spitz' translates to 'peak,' the forms are also intended as an homage to Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophic design principles.
Martino is an award-winning designer who produces objects, interiors and exhibitions that playfully challenge the distinctions between art and design. Based in London, he may be best-known for 100 Chairs in 100 Days in 100 Ways (2007), a project in which he combined design classics with scavenged bric-a-brac to produce a collection of chairs that epitomizes his spontaneous, often irreverent style. This pepper mill is a perfect reflection of his approach to design.
