We searched far and wide to find the perfect mug—a vessel no tea or coffee drinker takes lightly. The dimensions of this generous stoneware mug—hand-thrown at Made in Cley Pottery in Norfolk, UK—make it more like a small bowl than a teacup. Neither too wide, nor too deep, it's the design lover's answer to an essential tableware staple. Thrown using a British clay body, with a 'Blue Barley' glaze for a speckled, egg shell finish. Each mug is handmade, so no two are exactly alike.
Made in Cley Pottery was founded in 1984 in the small coastal village of Cley-next-the-Sea in Norfolk by four potters who were inspired by the work of Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, and others working under the influences of Japanese and Korean traditions. At Made in Cley, all potters work alongside one another in a co-op arrangement, sharing every aspect of the creative process, from building to glazing, firing and distribution.
