Calder Silk Scarf

Calder Silk Scarf

Starfish on Pink

For our collaboration with the Calder Foundation, we selected the luxury Italian textile house, Gentili Mosconi, to bring Alexander Calder's painting Starfish on Pink (1949) to life in wearable form. This supple, but substantial silk twill scarf has a bit of body to it, without sacrificing the slightest bit of drape. An easy accessory to add to any outfit for a touch of flair, this beautiful piece is sure to attract attention for its eye-catching color and bold composition. The hem is hand-rolled and sewn for an opulent finish.

While Calder (1898–1976) is best-known as a sculptor, and innovator of the 'mobile,' he made a diverse range of paintings, bringing to them a vibrant sense of motion and often combining unexpected fields of color with imaginative forms and symbols.

Located in the small town of Casnate con Bernate near Como, Gentili Mosconi specializes in nuanced, highly faithful textile printing and refined, luxury silks.

Alexander Calder’s invention of the mobile situates him as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, but his creative sensibility can be seen across the many media in which he worked throughout his long and varied career.

While he is best-known as a sculptor, Calder made a diverse range of paintings and drawings and, very occasionally, created designs for textiles. This particular untitled cartoon was designed in 1949 for production as a silk scarf that was, however, never realized during the artist’s lifetime. It incorporates motifs commonly associated with Calder’s practice and illustrates the boundless forms to which his prolific artistic sensibility was applied.

For this collaboration with the Calder Foundation, Permanent Collection chose the Italian textile house, Gentili Mosconi, to bring this design to life in wearable form. Located in the small town of Casnate con Bernate near Como, Gentili Mosconi was founded in 1988. They specialize in nuanced, highly faithful textile printing and refined, luxury silks.
